Helsing Junction Farm

Happy New Year!

Thanks to all of you for your support of local agriculture which made 2009 such a great year for our farm, despite the downturn in the economy!  Lots of sunny days meant bumper crops of tomatoes, peppers and other sun loving vegetables which we always appreciate here in the Pacific Northwest. We received a grant from the USDA/NRCS which provided us with the funds and knowledge to improve our soil fertility and it really showed in the quality and quantity of produce our farm grew last summer. Our CSA boxes contained almost 20% more produce then the cost of the share, enabling us to provide our CSA members (and probably some of their friends and family!) with wholesome, nutritious and reasonably priced food. We look forward to further improvements in our soil’s health in the 2010 season with the addition of a compost facility and increased habitat for pollinator species.

We are currently accepting memberships for the 2010 season. Thanks to all of you who have already joined. By joining early you are helping our farm to receive a steady annual income instead of a seasonally dependent one, as do most farms. Traditionally most large-scale farms rely on borrowing money from banks to tide them over until their first harvest gets sold in the spring or even summer. By joining early you are in effect becoming the bank for our farm and letting us pay you back the interest on the money you’ve lent us with vegetables! Yet another ingenious way in which CSA programs help farms immeasurably, one local family at a time. Thank you! May you have a happy, peaceful and healthy New Year!

We are located in Independence Valley, on the banks of the Chehalis River, about 20 miles south of Olympia Washington. For over 20 years, we’ve grown certified organic vegetables, fruits, flowers and herbs on our farm’s 50 fertile acres of bottomland soil. As one of the first CSA programs in Washington State, we have 18 years of experience behind us and offer the most variety of any CSA. Treat yourself to some of the best organic produce available, grown by women farmers who care about the environment and are passionate about good food!

What is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)?

CSA is simple yet revolutionary. As a CSA member, you join for the whole season and pay the farmer directly for your produce, which provides a secure retail market for the farm’s crops. This gives financial stability to the farm, which in turn enables the farm to commit to high quality produce at fair prices for you. With CSA programs there are no banks or government subsidies involved, just farmers and people working together to sustain small farms and provide quality food. Join a CSA program and become part of the growing movement striving to keep water and soil safe as well as maintain open spaces and farmland for the future. Help us put the culture back in agriculture!

We also partner with Provisions Mushroom Farm CSA, a local organic mushroom farm offering small and large shares of wild and cultivated gourmet mushrooms, which we deliver along with our CSA shares. Contact them directly for sign up info at: www.promushrooms.com
