Helsing Junction Farm is a 50 acre organic farm located in Rochester, WA. We are nestled at the eastern edge of Independence Valley, an agriculturally rich farming community about 25 miles south of Olympia. We operate a 1,000+ member CSA, delivering from Portland to Seattle and many places in between. In addition we do a smaller amount of wholesale and direct to business sales. Delivery Driver

Position Details:

Full-time, seasonal, May/June through November

As Delivery Driver, you are responsible for the safe and timely delivery of our CSA shares and wholesale items. This position works with an Assistant, making deliveries 3 to 5 times per week, depending on the time of year. CSA deliveries occur weekly, Tuesday through Thursday, each day going to multiple locations and drop-sites. Wholesale deliveries occur on Fridays and Saturdays.

The delivery route, which you will repeat every week, will remain the same throughout the season. Wholesale deliveries occur on Fridays and Saturdays and can vary in location and route. You will primarily drive our large 24’ box truck, and occasionally our smaller 20’ box truck as well. Both trucks are diesel with manual transmissions.

We begin loading the truck at 7:00 every morning, using a detailed color-coordinated packing sequence. As such, applicants cannot be color blind and must be able to follow an organized packing system.

This position requires a high attention to detail, punctuality, and a clean driving record. Applicants should have prior experience driving large trucks, a familiarity with basic auto mechanics, and be content driving many hours each day.

This position interacts with our CSA drop site hosts and other CSA members, and as such is a representative of the farm and its values. Applicants should be knowledgeable and enthusiastic about local agriculture, and patient and friendly representatives of the farm.

This position works closely with the Delivery Assistant and Office Manager, and as such must have strong communication skills. Due to the complexity of the routes and the necessity for prompt communication with the Office Manager as needed, applicants should have a smartphone with GPS and texting capabilities.

Please note: Candidates must be able to lift 50 pounds and move heavy items. If you have a history of chronic back pain or other serious physical ailments or limitations, this position would not be a good fit for you.

Responsibilities:

  • Driving a 24’ manual transmission box truck, including in densely populated urban areas

  • Making multiple deliveries a day, and keeping a tight schedule to ensure items are delivered on time

  • Interacting with CSA members, and acting as a positive and cheerful liaison between the farm and its members

  • Packing and organizing the truck for both CSA and Wholesale deliveries

  • Heavy lifting for extended periods of time

  • Prompt and clear communication with the Office Manager if/when problems arise while on route

  • Ensuring that the trucks are running smoothly, and promptly communicating issues if and as they arise

  • Working alongside and supervising a Delivery Assistant

Qualifications:

  • At least one year of experience that is applicable to this position (truck driving/deliveries/produce)

Delivery Driver Assistant

Field Crew Member

Position Details:

Full-time, seasonal, May, June, or July through November

As a member of our Field Crew, you will be a part of a team of co-workers, aiding and assisting in a wide variety of different tasks and responsibilities.

The Field Crew is the backbone of the farm, and most of the crew members have worked at the farm for many years. As such they are very skilled, efficient, autonomous, and independent in their work.

The Field Crew most commonly work altogether or in smaller groups, and as such all candidates should generally be positive, easy to get along with, energetic, adaptable, and capable of clear and consistent communication.

Responsibilities can at times be physically demanding, so all candidates must be capable of lifting heavy and awkward items up to 50 lbs., capable of performing repetitive tasks with endurance, and able to work for long durations even in inclement weather.

Field Production Assistant and Equipment Operator

Position Details:

Full-time, seasonal, April  through November

The Field Production Assistant works closely with the Farm Manager, aiding and assisting in all aspects of field production. The position is heavily focused on tractor and equipment work, and as such all interested applicants should have prior experience operating tractors and other farm equipment.

Applicants should be detail oriented, with an aptitude for record keeping, calculating fertilizer and pest control applications, troubleshooting equipment, and have a strong familiarity with plant identification and basic plant biology.

Working closely with the Farm Manager, this position requires strong communication skills, ability to multi-task, and proficiency reading field maps.

Irrigation Assistant

Position Details:

Full-time, seasonal, May through Novembe

As Irrigation Assistant this position is responsible for aiding and assisting in all aspects of the farm’s irrigation systems and works very closely with the farm’s Irrigation Manager. As such, you will be responsible for moving and maintaining our handline aluminum irrigation pipe, setting up and maintaining our drip irrigation systems, operating and maintaining our two main irrigation pumps, and monitoring and keeping track of our irrigation rotation.

Some tasks may require a light amount of tractor work, with training provided for anyone with no prior tractor experience.

Applicants should have a strong disposition towards organization and cleanliness, be detail oriented, with an aptitude for record keeping, and be able to multitask in a fast paced environment.

Irrigation Manager

Position Details:

Full-time, seasonal, April  through November

As Irrigation Manager, you will be responsible for setting up, moving, and maintaining the farm’s irrigation systems. This includes moving and maintaining our handline aluminum irrigation pipe, setting up and maintaining our drip irrigation systems, operating and maintaining our two main irrigation pumps, and monitoring and keeping track of our irrigation rotation.

Packshed Manager

Position Details:

Full-time, seasonal, April  through November

As Packshed Manager, your position is responsible for managing and overseeing the farm’s packshed, produce washing and processing, and coordinating and processing wholesale orders.

We pack and deliver 1,000+ boxes of varied produce each week to our CSA members along with restaurant orders and medium to large volume  wholesale orders.

You and a rotating group of crew members will be responsible for quality control and accuracy in fulfilling orders. During the height of our season, most of your time will be spent in and around the packshed, but versatility is important as we will need you to be able to participate in other areas of the farm as needed.This may include harvesting, delivering, stocking our farm stand and some customer service.  In order to do well in this position you must have a strong disposition towards organization and cleanliness, be detail oriented with an aptitude for record keeping, and be able to multitask in a fast paced environment while working quickly and efficiently.

Responsibilities:

  • Washing and processing produce post-harvest, quickly, efficiently and consistently

  • Tracking the time that your projects are taking and communicating with the Farm Manager and Field Crew Manager if timing needs cannot be met

  • Labeling and maintaining product inventory at our packshed and our refrigerated cooler

  • Managing, supervising, and working well with  a crew of 1-6 co-workers to maintain consistent quality and time-efficient work.

  • Communicating well with the Farm Manager and Harvest Managers when issues arise to come up with a solution

  • Keeping packshed and wash station cleaned and organized

  • Occasional local produce delivery

  • Occasionally joining the harvest crew, transplanting crew, or stocking our farmstand
