Delivery Driver Assistant
Helsing Junction Farm is a 50 acre organic farm located in Rochester, WA. We are nestled at the eastern edge of Independence Valley, an agriculturally rich farming community about 25 miles south of Olympia. We operate a 1,000 member CSA, delivering from Portland to Seattle. In addition we do a smaller amount of wholesale and direct to business sales. The farm was started in 1992 by Annie Salafsky and Sue Ujcic and was one of the country’s first CSA operations. Annie and Sue continue to run the farm, along with a crew of 20 at the height of the season. Many of the farm’s employees have worked on the farm for many years, appreciating the kind and friendly environment Annie and Sue have fostered, as well as the sense of independence and ownership they instill in all their employees.
As Delivery Driver Assistant, you will assist with the safe and timely delivery of our CSA shares. This position works with the farm’s main Delivery Driver, making deliveries 3 times per week from June through October. CSA deliveries occur weekly, Tuesday through Thursday, each day going to multiple locations and drop-sites. This position will be trained to drive our manual transmission box trucks and will learn the delivery routes, but will only drive when our Delivery Driver is unable. . We begin loading the truck at 7:00 every morning, using a detailed color-coordinated packing sequence. As such, applicants cannot be color blind and must be able to follow an organized packing system. This position’s main responsibilities include helping load and unload the truck, providing directions and assistance to the Driver as needed, and interacting with CSA members. Applicants must have a high attention to detail, a clean driving record, and be punctual. The workweek is Tuesday through Thursday, averaging 36 to 40 hours per week. Applicants should have prior experience driving large trucks or heavy equipment, should have a familiarity with basic auto mechanics, and be content making deliveries for many hours each day. This position interacts closely with our CSA drop site hosts and other CSA members, and as such is a representative of the farm and its values. Applicants should be knowledgeable and enthusiastic about local agriculture, and patient and friendly representatives of the farm. This position works closely with the Delivery Driver and Office Manager, and as such must have strong communication skills. Due to the complexity of the routes and the necessity for prompt communication with the Office Manager as needed, applicants must have a smartphone with GPS and texting capabilities. This is a seasonal position, going June thru October, with the possibility of extending beyond as well. This position is full-time, but only works 3 days per week, and is well-suited for anyone happy to work long days in exchange for long weekends. There is possibility to work additional days on the farm as a part of our Field Crew, if desired.
- Making multiple deliveries a day, and keeping a tight schedule to ensure items are delivered on time
- Interacting with CSA members, and acting as a liaison between the farm and its members
- Packing and organizing the truck for both CSA and Wholesale deliveries
- Heavy lifting for extended periods of time
- Driving a 24’ manual transmission box truck, including in densely populated urban areas
- Ensuring that the trucks are running smoothly, and promptly communicating issues if and as they arise
